Where to Place Water Fountains in the Home
Every home could use a water feature to add some vitality, serenity and beauty to one or more rooms. Water fountains have a wide range of benefits including humidifying the air, relieving stress, assisting in the flow of chi in Feng Shui arrangements and providing a striking focal point. Whether you want to put your new water fountain in your living room, bedroom, foyer or any other area of the home, we can give you some tips in choosing just the right spot for it.
If you already have a particular spot or room in mind, there are just a couple of things to consider before making a final fountain purchasing decision. The area you choose could determine whether a wall fountain, tabletop fountain or floor fountain would be best depending on a few major factors.
Will there be a lot of traffic immediately surrounding the area where you'd like to place your fountain? You wouldn't want to place a floor fountain or deep-profile wall fountain in an area where it could be bumped into accidentally. Additionally, placing floor fountains in high traffic areas ' especially certain areas of foyers ' could result in dust and other debris being kicked up into the fountain water, making it necessary to change it and clean the fountain more often. While wall fountains are ideal for hallways and other narrow spaces, make sure there is plenty of room for people to walk around them without having to go out of their way.
Could water droplets or humidity damage any nearby surfaces, or cause someone to slip and fall? While indoor fountains shouldn't splash excessively (see our FAQ for solutions if yours does splash), occasionally a few water droplets can escape or condensation can develop on the underside of the basin. Don't place tabletop or floor fountains on delicate surfaces prone to water damage, like untreated wood. This is another reason that fountains should not be placed in high traffic areas. Unless you have someone who's able to wipe up the area immediately surrounding the fountain basin frequently, it's best to place your fountain in an area where it can be viewed and enjoyed without people walking right by it all the time.
In addition to safety and damage concerns, you should consider the visual impact a fountain will have upon your home and how you can best enjoy all the benefits of owning a fountain. The following tips can help you choose a spot that will allow you, your family and guests to get the most out of your fountain purchase:
Don't crowd your fountain with too many decorative objects. Fountains should serve as eye-catching focal points in a room. It's best to give them plenty of space on the floor, wall or table surfaces for maximum impact. If you have a lot of framed photos or wall art, knick knacks or other objects around the fountain, they'll take away from the pleasant, relaxing aspects of the fountain. Clear the area and allow your fountain to shine. A few candles or plants can enhance the beauty of a fountain and help anchor it in the space without overshadowing it.
Place the fountain where people can actually see it. Many people make the mistake of spending money on a beautiful water fountain and then place it in a spot where there are no comfortable seats nearby to enjoy the water sounds. One of the greatest perks to owning a fountain is the ability to draw people in. Fountains make people want to linger nearby, creating a gathering place in the home. They also make a dramatic first impression and serve to welcome guests into your home, which is why designers often place them in entryways.
Avoid placing your fountain too close to your television. The water sound and television audio will compete with each other, so that you're either not able to hear what you're watching or can't enjoy the trickling sounds of the fountain. Since fountains naturally mitigate sound, why not use them to block out traffic noise or a neighbor's television set instead?
