Q&A: Why can't indoor fountains be used outside?

Sl_6277 When shopping for a fountain, it's important to consider whether you plan to use your fountain indoors or outdoors. Look for a specification in the description - most are designed for use indoors unless otherwise noted. Some fountains can be used both indoors and outdoors, giving you greater flexibility - particularly when the weather changes.

The main reasons you shouldn't place an indoor fountain outside have to do with electrical components such as the power cord/plug and built-in lighting. Outdoor fountains must have UL-approved grounded (three-prong) plugs to protect against the risk of electric shock when exposed to moisture. Special 'shrouds' protect built-in lights. Without these special modifications, your fountain may not be safe for outdoor use.

Fountains made specifically for use outdoors also have finishes that are made to stand up to the elements. Certain finishes on indoor fountains could start to peel, crack, fade or otherwise deteriorate after prolonged exposure to sunlight, moisture and wind. Many fountain manufacturers apply a special sealant to their fountains to keep them looking beautiful for years into the future. Some fountains are designed to go through a natural aging process that actually enhances their beauty, such as those made from natural copper, stone or concrete. A lovely blue-green patina may develop on copper fountains that aren't clear coated after exposure to moisture, and other fountain surfaces may grow moss. These changes to your fountain's finish are natural and serve to add character and an antique look.

Occasionally, someone shopping for a fountain for an interior space wishes to use an outdoor fountain instead of choosing one made for use indoors. This generally isn't advised, since outdoor fountains are created to allow a certain amount of splashing to enhance the water sound and/or create more interesting cascading effects. Not only could this cause problems with carpeting, wood floors and other surfaces, you could run the risk of people slipping and falling. Indoor fountains are made with these concerns in mind.

If you really want to place a garden fountain in an interior courtyard, wine cellar or other indoor space, discuss your ideas with a local contractor. They can often help you ensure that the space around the fountain won't be harmed by excess condensation and humidity.

Some fountain manufacturers can modify an indoor fountain for use outdoors for an additional fee. Contact Kinetic Fountains customer service if there's one you've got your eye on.
