Fountain Water Sources

Decorative water fountains come in a myriad of sizes, shapes, and colors. You can get one that compliments any indoor or outdoor space perfectly, and it will create an ambiance that will draw people in. Because of the many different applications of water fountains, there are different ways that they are set up and this includes the water source. The two different types of water fountains are dedicated source fountains and recirculating fountains. Your decision between these two types of fountains will depend upon its size and overall water capacity.

Recirculating Fountains

Haikumoon_1 Nearly every fountain that is purchased for residential or small office settings is equipped with recirculating electric pumps. These fountains have a basin of water at the base of the fountain structure, which is sometimes called a catch-basin, water receptacle or pan. The pump sits in this basin of water and keeps the water circulating through the fountain via tubing that goes from the pump, into the body or face of the fountain up to the top, where the water streams out. These fountains can be placed virtually anywhere regardless of whether there is an adjacent water source.

Recirculating fountains must be refilled often to replenish water that is lost through evaporation. If you live in an area that has a dry climate, the water in your fountain will evaporate much faster than those in humid climates. If you have oil or gas heat in your home, you will also experience faster evaporation and will need to re-fill your fountain more often. We recommend adding water on a daily basis - a good way to remember to do this, is to add water to the fountain when you water your plants.

Dedicated Source Fountains

Dedicatedfountain Larger fountains that are used in commercial settings sometimes will have a dedicated water source, just for the fountain. These fountains often contain hundreds or thousands of gallons of water, and could need 50-100 gallons added per day to make up for evaporation! No one would want to have to worry about that. The water source for dedicated source fountains could be something as simple as a garden hose, but most often it is built by a contractor and/or plumber. If you're looking for a very large custom outdoor fountain, you'll want to speak with a plumber before placing an order so you can ensure that your desired location will work.

Most fountain retailers only offer recirculating fountains, but special orders can be placed for dedicated source fountains. KineticFountains.com has a wide range of fountains available and will discuss custom options with you as well.
