Determing the Right Wall Fountain Size for Your Space

Cf2001 So, you've decided to purchase a beautiful new wall fountain. You can just imagine how elegant it will look up on your wall, and how everyone will want to gather around it and be soothed by the wonderful sounds of flowing water. But what size is right for your space? How do you tell? Don't order the wrong size wall fountain, only to put it up and realize it's just not right for the wall it's being placed on. Use these easy guidelines to determine how large of a wall fountain you should purchase.

Horizontal or Vertical?

Take a look at your available space, focusing on the wall length and ceiling height. If you have very high ceilings, think about finding a wall fountain that is tall vertically. If the wall is long, but has below average or average ceiling height, consider a horizontal wall fountain. You may not want to invest in a tall vertical fountain for a very wide wall, unless you have ideas of other features that will be placed on either side of the fountain. The depth of the space is also important. If the fountain is going into a hallway or foyer, be sure that the 6" average depth of the fountain would not jut out so much that your guests might bump into it or brush up against it. A fountain is mean to open up a space and make it seem more harmonious, not close it up and make it appear smaller.

Four Corners Approach

Get the measurements of the fountain that you are interested in purchasing, and measure them out on your wall. Then take either post-it notes, thumb tacks, tape, or any other item that will stick to a wall and place it on the four corners of the measurements of the fountain. Back up and see if the size looks good for your space.

Outline Approach

This is similar to the 'four corners approach', but allows you a better view of the size by outlining the actual dimensions of the fountain that you are interested in purchasing. Follow the instructions for the four corners approach, but this time use thumb tacks to mark the four corners; wrap some string around them and tie the two ends together. Now you will have a better feel for the size of your new wall fountain.

Poster Board Cut-Out Approach

As the name implies, this approach requires making a template in the size of your new fountain. This approach is recommended for new building construction, in which the walls have not yet been completed. To do this, take one or more pieces of poster board and cut them out in the size and shape of your new fountain. If the fountain is very large, such a the Cottonwood Falls pictured, you will probably have to tape a few pieces of poster board together. We recommend choosing a poster board color that will stand out on the wall. Once you have the template created, hang it from the wall with some tape.

Using one of these four approaches will give you confidence in your choice of a wall fountain. If you find that the fountain you picked out is not the right size, you can simply choose another one and have this trial-and-error process complete before actually purchasing a fountain. It will save you the hassle of having to return one and wait on a new one.
