Having a beautiful outdoor water feature, such as those made from stone or ceramic, can be a wonderful addition to any outdoor space. Whether you are using the piece in your garden or you have the fountain become the focus of your backyard, there is something special about having a water feature. They can help a person relax and they can add a new dimension to outdoor décor. The fountains are never going to go out of style, and they can last for many years. Of course, you have to make sure that you are able to care for your fountain properly.
Cleaning the Fountain
The outside of the fountains can become quite dirty easily. From the dust and grime that accumulates on the fountain to little “gifts” from birds that crisscross your backyard skies, gunk and dirt and encrust your fountain in no time. It’s generally a good idea to clean your fountain at least once a week or so. Checking often like that will ensure that you can clean most of the dirt away so that it doesn’t have a chance to build. Even simply hosing down the fountain when watering the lawn or garden can help to keep it looking great.
Checking the Water and the Pump
Depending on the type of fountain you have, you may need to check the water levels to see if it has enough water in it. Most of the simple to use fountains that you will put in your backyard aren’t going to need to hook into your plumbing – you simply fill them with water and turn them on. However, in hot weather, the water can evaporate quickly, and that means that you need to make sure that you have enough water in the fountain so that the pump doesn’t burn out.
Caring for the Water Feature in Cold Weather
Those who live in cold climates where it snows in the winter will want to make sure that they winterize their water features properly. In the case of some smaller outdoor water fountains, it might be possible to bring them inside. Other times, you will have to drain the water and remove or protect the pump. You might also want to cover the fountain to keep it out of the elements.
The water feature can be a great element to add to your outdoor décor, and it can be just as important as your patio furniture. Make sure you protect your fountains!
